At The Ode To we are always curious to learn more about creativity and artistry, so we asked Sintia Wijk to tell us a little bit about her life, her art and her sources of inspiration.
What do you call your series of artworks?
– 'Underneath the Surface'. The collection is inspired by ancient hidden ruins that slowly resurface and reveal themselves to the human eye.
What technique have you used?
– The artworks are made from pieces of recycled wood that I find around old homes. I cut, shape and smoothen the wood manually and create a layered pattern from the small pieces. Then I cover the woodwork with a mixture of sand and acrylics. Once dry, the next step is to apply pigment powders to add even more depth; the result is a framed wooden wall relief that is rich in texture and shape.
What inspired you to create the artworks you have made for The Ode To?
– The collection symbolizes the notion that underneath the surface of every human you can find traces of their past. If you uncover the layers with care and attention, like an archeologist, it might provide valuable insights and create a deeper connection.
Can you tell us about your background and how you came to be an artist?
– I am a full-time studio artist living and working in Haarlem (The Netherlands). I have a background in Psychology and have always been fascinated by human interactions and behavioral patterns. I’ve been creating art for a few years now, since the covid crisis inspired me to re-evaluate my career, dreams and aspirations. Having an artistic outlet is so important to me and my interest in the human mind inspires me to create pieces of art that are layered and multidimensional.
How would you describe your art and aesthetics in three words?
– Threedimensional, textured, layered.
